HOW DO I KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO UPGRADE MY FUSE BOX?

The fuse box is a critical part of any electrical system. Like most other electrical supply components, it may have to be upgraded or replaced at some point. Many homeowners who don't get on top of this may end up with a dangerous device.

So, when should fuse boxes be upgraded?

The right time to update a fuse box

If your property has an old fuse box with cartridge-style or rewireable fuses, it probably warrants replacing. It's recommended to upgrade it to a more modern metal-backed fuse box with miniature circuit breakers and RCD (residual-current device) protection.

The change will instantly add a reliable shield against electrocution and fire. RCDs can be a true life-saver since they can identify small leakage currents ranging from 5 to 30mA. They can also disconnect in under 300 milliseconds, which helps prevent electrocution.

Contemporary fuse boxes contain another valuable element — metal cladding. It's been installed in consumer units since 2016 to stave off fires brought about by loose wires inside plastic units. Such casing may overheat, and metal does a much better job of fire containment.

Reasons for a fuse box upgrade

Here are some other reasons to upgrade a fuse box:

  • Installing additional circuits, such as adding extensions, extra sockets, or converting a garage.

  • Making electrical alterations in the bathroom or kitchen.

  • The fuse box is old and wooden.

  • The fuses trip frequently.

  • The fuse box has asbestos flash guards. Asbestos fiber can lead to severe consequences if inhaled, so it's best to switch to a safer alternative.

  • Unresponsive sockets or flickering lights can indicate a deteriorating fuse box.

  • Fuses more than ten years old may have deteriorated.

How long does it take to mount a new fuse box?

The time needed to install a new fuse box depends on the house's wiring and age. But in normal circumstances, it may take up to a day to replace and test everything. Professional electricians will also verify that the bonding and earthing meet required standards and make any necessary tweaks. As a result, it may take them a bit longer to complete the process.

What's the cost of installing a new fuse box?

Mounting a new fuse box could cost $500 to $700. Once the licensed electricians have installed all components and tested the grid, they will record the results in the Electrical Installation Certificate. They'll give you a copy that confirms the work's adherence to BS 7671 requirements.

Get professional help to check and upgrade your fuse box

While it may be tempting to upgrade a fuse box on your own, this is never a smart move for the unqualified. Without adequate training and equipment, the risk of electrocution goes up significantly. As such, always hire professional electricians for anything that has to do with your fuse box and wiring.
