THE EVOLUTION OF SMART SECURITY

Our electrical devices have become smarter, more secure, and more integrated than ever before. We now have electronic security programs with systems so advanced that even a doorbell can catch an intruder on film before he ever steps over the threshold.

Smart home systems, the backbone of Smart security, started in security alarms

Many burglars will now turn and run when they see the Ring doorbell.

Because locking windows didn’t prevent intruders, wired burglar alarms were invented. Then, technology advanced further, and security programs advanced, as well. But, even as technology has gone wireless, hackers and thieves have, as well. So, even with all of our electrical advances, a well-appointed Smart security system with a dedicated wireless network still comes with some security risks.

Historical perspective

Home security has evolved far beyond the klaxon siren. when many people accidentally set off on their six am jog down to the end of the driveway to get the paper. (For that matter, newspapers at the end of the driveway are clearly on their way out, as well.) But, even in its heyday, the home alarm system often did nothing more than irritate the savvy burglar, since neighbors were pre-conditioned to believe the alarm was set off by the homeowner rather than any real threat. Even many homeowners would wander downstairs to see what set off their alarm rather than feel they might be in imminent danger.

Newer technology

Now that systems are wireless, the homeowner can monitor and control security devices from an app on his phone. The app can lock doors, turn lights on and off, engage and view and record remote cameras, and more.

A basic system can monitor one or more doors, and windows, a motion detector, offer a hub that communicates with the devices through a wireless system. The basic system can easily be expanded to provide a litany of doors, windows, and cameras throughout the home and property.

Hub, hub hooray.

Given the sophisticated nature of these systems, a thief has to expand his skills far beyond lock bumping or slipping through an open window. Electronic systems require electronic hacking, and while this is beyond the capabilities of the average thief, once the system is compromised, the more things that are attached to it, the more come under the control of the hacker. Open networks are particularly vulnerable, so they should never be used. Direct denial of service attacks, or DDoS, can and have brought widespread blocks against irate consumers.

Thus, the old deadbolt is still with us. The good news is, electricians and technicians all over the world take security threats seriously, making it harder for thieves to steal through electronic hacking. One thing is for certain, though—although we have more security now than ever, we aren’t at the end of the evolution of Smart security and electronic devices by any means.

If you need an electrician to install the electrical components of a Smart home security system, give us a call. Once a system is hardwired, it will never need new batteries, offering better reliability than battery-operated counterparts.
